Coffered Ceiling Installation

What is a coffered ceiling?

A coffered ceiling can add interest to a room, or alter one’s perception of the size of the room. The word coffer comes from the French for box; a church collection box is still called a coffer. When used to describe a ceiling it refers to a pattern of box-like recesses created on the surface, usually by crossed beams. In historic structures the beams may be real, but currently they are usually decorative. A specialty option is acoustic coffers. An array of sound-absorbing panels may be installed in large rooms to improve the acoustics.

Even with decorative coffers, there is a significant amount of work associated with their installation. However, there are many good reasons to consider a coffered ceiling. In a room with a high ceiling, deep coffers in a dark color can make the room appear much more intimate. Similarly, in a room with a lower ceiling, shallow coffers with light contrasting inner panels can make the room seem larger. In either case, the decorative quality can increase the value of a home or building. The look can be tailored to be anything from sleek and modern to fussy Victorian to ornate and formal.

For a decorative coffer, U and/or T shaped supports are fastened to the ceiling joists. These are then faced with decorative mouldings, arranged singly or in layers, to create a look that matches the other woodwork in the room. Sometimes bosses or other raised decorations are added at the corners of the coffers.

Although coffers are usually square or rectangular, elaborate ceilings may be divided into octagons or other regular geometric shapes. The more elaborate examples are often seen in historic churches.
