Crown Molding Defined
Crown Moulding is a linear strip of material that covers the junction where the walls of a room meet the ceiling. Occasionally it is needed to cover a bad joint, but generally crown moulding is purely decorative. It can be narrow, but because is it out of normal eye range, it is usually wide with numerous planes or decoration to draw attention to itself.
Traditionally, crown moldings were made of wood or plaster. If complex designs were included in wood these had to be painstakingly carved by hand. Plaster mouldings were cast and intricately painted, but they were susceptible to damage from damp conditions. Both were time consuming to install and heavy, requiring expert fastening. Needless to say, they were mostly found in homes of the wealthy. New, lightweight materials and production processes have now made beautiful crown moldings available to anyone who wants to add them to a room.
Wood is still used for simple crown moulding. Stock strips can be built up into more complex profiles and routed mouldings are also available in dozens of profiles. Medium-density fiberboard is a pressure formed product made of wood fibers. Its advantages are consistency- there will be no knots, and it can be cut, sanded and painted like wood; therefore, MDF is our material of choice for crown molding installations.
MDF crown moulding installation is easily affordable, as are mouldings which extend on to the ceiling creating a tray ceiling effect. We also offer decorative elements to coordinate into the other “woodwork” in your home.
Crown Moulding Installation
The width of a crown moulding should be based to some extent on the height of the ceiling. Lower ceilings will look best with a narrow choice. Very high ceilings can be ornamented with deep and complicated mouldings. Outer corners will need to be miter cut, while inner corners required coping for a finished look. The only exception would be plastic moldings where the corner is pre-formed in a particular shape such as a bullnose.
Our professional installer will help a homeowner choose mouldings that will fit the style and size of the rooms. When the selection is made, accurate measurements will be taken digitally. An estimate based on the length of mouldings and number of corners will be presented to the client. When the preliminaries are complete, the cutting will be done off site, on custom jigs, and with compound miter saws, ensuring tight and perfect joints. This means that there will be very little dust and mess associated with the work. All outer corners will be glued, and nail holes filled.
Use a crown moulding to make a room stand out in a unique way. The options are now affordable, and are limited only by your imagination.
